The Vitals 005 - Cybersecurity, the Future of Medtech, and Industry Vampires

Protecting Medical Devices from Cyber Attacks

Protecting Medical Devices from Cyber Attacks

Problem: A recent ransomware attack on the Ascension health system exposed the cybersecurity risks that hospitals face, especially from legacy medical devices running outdated software (MedTech Dive). Despite new regulations, older devices continue to be a major vulnerability point in healthcare networks.

Solution: The FDA and international regulators urge medical device manufacturers to plan for system updates and secure designs.

By working together, the industry aims to modernize legacy devices and strengthen defenses against future threats. President of R&D & Engineering Richard Thompson POV: We take cybersecurity for our electronic medical devices very seriously. We design our devices to meet the latest standards and incorporate safety into our risk mitigation strategy.

We also build redundant systems to exceed the FDA's base requirements to protect against vulnerabilities and threats.

Innovation Fellowship to Shape Future MedTech Leaders

Innovation Fellowship to Shape Future MedTech Leaders

Spark Biomedical has introduced a year-long Innovation Fellowship to equip resident clinicians with hands-on experience in medical device development and entrepreneurship (Medical Product Outsourcing).

Participants will work alongside experts from clinical, engineering, and business disciplines. The program aims to shape the next generation of leaders in MedTech through intensive training and real-world exposure.

VitaTek POV: In a field as complex as MedTech, cross-collaboration is essential.

The best innovations come from a team effort, which is why our engineers regularly collaborate with regulatory experts and the manufacturing team to align on every aspect of development.

At VitaTek, we also hold weekly meetings with our physician inventors and medical device innovators, making sure their vision is translated into a real-life device that meets both clinical needs and industry standards.

Featured Innovation: GE's Portable Ultrasound

Featured Innovation: GE's Portable Ultrasound

GE HealthCare has introduced the Venue Sprint, a portable ultrasound system built for point-of-care use in critical care, emergency medicine, and medical transport settings (The Healthcare Technology Reports).

The Venue Sprint leverages wireless probe capabilities and AI-enabled tools to boost diagnostic speed, flexibility, and efficiency, ultimately aiming to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

VitaTek POV: We are developing a disposable device that integrates vascular Doppler technology, allowing clinicians to quickly and accurately check blood flow during surgery.

This will increase clinician confidence and lower risks, reinventing the standard of care across a wide range of surgical procedures.

Warding off Industry Vampires at The MedTech Conference and MD&M Minneapolis

Warding off Industry Vampires at The MedTech Conference and MD&M Minneapolis

The VitaTek Avengers attended two major conferences last week: the MedTech Conference in Toronto, Canada, and MD&M Minneapolis in Minnesota. Despite the events’ overlapping dates, we made it a priority to have a strong presence at each conference.

At the MedTech Conference, we joined 4,350 attendees from 48 countries in what was the highest-attended conference in AdvaMed’s history. Our Avengers sales team was outstanding, talking with nearly a hundred different companies interested in development help.

Meanwhile, a second team of Avengers represented VitaTek at MD&M Minneapolis, right here at home in the heart of Medical Alley. With 5,300 attendees, the conference brought together engineers, executives, and manufacturers, connecting with key industry players and expanding our local network.

We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ward off those medical device vampires while at the show with a bowl of free garlic.

NEXT STOP!

Catch us at our next conference, MEDICA in Düsseldorf, Germany at Booth #15G18-6 from 11/11 to 11/14, where a full squad of Avengers will be there to show you there is a better way to develop medical devices.

Stay tuned for more updates and more garlic!

VitaTek's Virtual Workshop features Ken Meyer on the top of Medical Device Regulatory

Join us for a one-hour live workshop where VitaTek’s Senior Regulatory Specialist, Ken Meyer, will tackle the Top 3 Regulatory Hurdles in Medical Device Development.

Ken will break down the most frequent challenges and share insights to help you navigate the complexities of the regulatory process. Bring your toughest questions – the ones you didn’t want to have to pay a regulatory vampire consultant to answer!

The workshop will consist of a short presentation of the 3 most common hurdles and end with a 30-min for the Q&A session.

Tuesday, October 29th

3PM EST / 2PM CST / 1PM MST / 12PM PST
